Postgraduate Travel Awards for ACAM 5
Four students won travel awards to present their papers at ACAM 5, the fifth Australasian Congress on Applied Mechanics (Brisbane, 10-12 December 2007). The selection process for the awards was based on the technical merit of each student's conference paper.
The Winners were
- John Codrington (University of Adelaide) - "Investigation of plasticity-induced fatigue crack closure"
- Matthew Lamb (University of Victoria) - "Determining fatigue progression in corrugated paperboard containers subjected to dynamic compression"
- Hamid Valipour (UNSW) - "Consistent mass and exact displacement shape function for a tapered curve frame element"
- Chi Yan Tang (University of Sydney) - "The mechanical properties and strain effects of a silicon nano-wire under uni-axial tension and compression"
Best Student Poster at ACAM 5
Three students won awards in the student poster competition at ACAM 5.
Winner
- Ross Batten (University of Queensland) - "The effects of passing speed distribution on rail corrugation growth rate"
Runners Up
- Stuart Wildy (University of Adelaide) - "Monitoring of crack propagation using a cluster of piezo-sensors"
- Md Mainul Islam (University of Newcastle) - "Properties and mechanical behaviour of novel sandwich composites made of syntactic foam and paper skin"
Innovation in Teaching of Applied Mechanics

The award is open to anyone who has successfully introduced innovative programs or teaching aids on Applied Mechanics for engineering students.
Nominations for this Award will be called in 2010.
Previous Winners
- 2005 - Dr Rebecca Gravina, RMIT University
- 1999 - Dr Nathan Scott and Professor Brian Stone, University of Western Australia.
