Standards of Practice
This document provides direction to biomedical engineers working in clinical Engineering – by defining the scope and role of clinical engineering in Australian health care organisations, and setting standards suitable for measurement and evaluation of performance.
Donation of Medical Equipment to Developing Countries
Many developing countries need aid and assistance to establish healthcare infrastructure. This includes the medical technologies that are required to provide adequate and appropriate levels of healthcare for the circumstances that prevail. Yet, too often, well-intentioned donations of "surplus" equipment are inappropriate and can pose their own set of problems on re-location.
A number of organisations around the world have developed guidelines for the donation of medical equipment. Some representative examples are available here:
- Royal Australasian College of Surgeons: Guidelines for the donation of medical equipment to Pacific Island countries (PDF 34kb)
- PNG National Department of Health Biomedical Engineering Service: Acceptance of donated Medical Equipment (PDF 42kb)
The Biomedical College within Engineers Australia supports these organisations in their quest to ensure that donations are appropriate and sustainable.
Further information or advice can be obtained from organisations referenced in these documents or from the College .
