Impacts of Population Growth Discussion Forum

As a nation, Australia must overcome a number of challenges if we are to be prosperous in terms of having a sustainable social, economic and physical environment, equitably shared by all Australians.

These challenges are complex at a global and local level, and range from climate change, economic issues, health, and population growth and the consequent equitable and sustainable access to resources.

Population growth has come to the fore as an issue of public debate in Australia.

Engineers Australia invites Members to discuss this and other issues that will arise in the future with regard to our infrastructure needs. It is our view that careful planning around Australia's future population is essential to ensure the health, wealth and well being of all Australians.

Meetings and CPD

The Electrical College operates through meetings at the national level and meetings at Divisional (local) level.

At the national level, the College's affairs are managed by the Board of the College (constituted of volunteer office bearers), led by the Board's Executive Committee which includes the current chair, 2 deputy chairs and the past chair. The Board and its Executive Committee are supported by a Committee Administrator of Engineers Australia's national office in Canberra, who organises and attends all meetings, organises minutes, events etc.

In a typical year's cycle, the Board's Executive Committee meets during February or March to plan the year ahead, then the full Board meets in June at a capital city of choice. Associated with that meeting is the annual Awards Dinner at which major prizes such as the MA Sargent Medal, the NPEEoY and GEPEoY are presented.

Later in  the year, typically in October or November, the full Board meets again, generally at an east coast city.

It should be noted that the Chair of the College Board also represents the College at Engineers Australia’s Congress, which meets at least once each year to provide the means for across the organisation briefings, discussion on significant issues and policies, as well as guidance to Council on specific matters.

At Divisional level the College operates through local Electrical Engineering Panels (sometimes called “Branches”), and some of these operate jointly with the ITEE College.  The local Panels have committees that generally meet monthly and organise CPD events (evening presentations, lunches with speakers site visits etc) for members.  These are the core services provided through the College’s framework and they are advertised through local newsletters and Divisional websites.

Promotional Activities

The College is involved in various activities of this kind, both at national and at local level.

For example, the College at national level has been sponsoring the Victorian Model Solar Vehicle Challenge and is doing so again in 2009.  The following images show what is involved and the enthusiastic response it draws.  More information on this excellent event for young students, organised by the engineering fraternity at Monash University with support from Engineers Australia including the EESA, can be obtained at http://www.modelsolar-vic.net if desired.
