The twin 12.45m diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines used on the Airport Link project met a different end to most TBMs. To avoid extensive surface impacts from extraction works and to provide schedule certainty for tunnel completion, the 1270T shield of the machines were buried under the alignment, in pits 16m deep, within 3 weeks of final breakthrough and only a few days apart.
This presentation will describe the reasons for burying the TBMs, the options considered for burial, the design, fabrication and positioning of the burial system, the partial disassembly of the TBM and the burial and backfill operations.
