Presentation Abstract:
The eastern section (F3 Freeway to Kurri Kurri) of the Hunter Expressway is being built under an alliance contract with NSW Roads and Martime Services, Thiess Pty Ltd, Parsons Brinckerhoff and Hyder Consulting. It is 13km and includes the construction of three viaducts through the Sugarloaf Range.
Three viaduct bridges are being constructed over abandoned mine workings. The strategies adopted for managing the subsidence risk include both filling of old mine workings and bridge design solutions. The subsidence challenges, the mine fill treatment design, and the development and implementation of the validation strategy will be discussed.
Despite extensive mine filling operations, the viaduct structures still had to cope with the impact of valley closures caused by far-field mine subsidence outside the area of treatment. The potential impact on construction programme was also of concern as the mine filling operations involved some extensive drilling in difficult terrain. The proposed Viaduct structural solution as well as the construction method chosen to limit the risk of potential delays will be discussed.
