Current operation of berths 1 & 2 are limited by "no load zones" where cranes and unloading hoppers are not allowed to operate. The wharf deck is 320mm thick supported on a grid of karri stringer beams, and half cap beams, which are in turn supported on octagonal reinforced concrete piles. Berth 2 was built in 1955 and berth 1 was built in 1956. The "no load" areas have been imposed as a result of a series of inspections that have detailed areas where the deck soffit and pilecaps in the intertidal zone have serious loss of structural capacity due to corrosion of the reinforcing steel.

Out of a total of 783 piles and 7570m2 of deck soffit, 112 pilecaps and 101 m2 of deck soffit require reconstruction by the year 2015 in order to get the front half of the wharf back to its original structural capacity. Continued degradation of the remaining piles and deck is expected to continue such that an additional 450 piles and 600m2 of deck soffit shall require replacement by 2035.
