M A Sargent Medal

The M A Sargent Medal is the most prestigious award made by the Colleges of Electrical Engineering and Information, Telecommunications and Electronic Engineering. It is named in honour of Dr Michael Anthony (Mike) Sargent, an outstanding Australian electrical engineer and President of the Institution of Engineers, Australia in 1990.

The M A Sargent Medal consists of a bronze medal, which is presented to an outstanding Australian electrical engineer each year. Selection is based upon: a highly significant contribution, through technical innovation, to the science or practice of electrical engineering; or longstanding eminence in science or the practice of electrical engineering; or exceptional and sustained management or leadership relating to electrical engineering; or a notable combination of the foregoing qualities.

2007 M A Sargent Medal Presentation

Dr Sargent will present the 2007 Medal to Professor Vic Gosbell FIEAust, CPEng on the 6 June 2008, in recognition of his leading role in setting up the benchmark for a national power quality and his valuable contributions in developing technical innovative changes to the power industry including National Standards.

Professor Gosbell established and led the Integral Energy Power Quality and Reliability Centre at Wollongong University. Under his leadership the Centre has been a major player in the development of national power quality practices.

M A Sargent

Dr Sargent graduated from the University of Queensland in 1964 and gained a PhD in electrical engineering at the same university in 1967. After holding various engineering appointments in Queensland and North America he joined the S-E Queensland Electricity Board in 1978 becoming its Chief Engineer in 1984 and became Manager, Business Systems in 1989. He was appointed Chief Executive Officer of ACTEW Corporation in November 1991 and of Transfield Power Systems on 4 August 1997. Dr Sargent has over 35 years experience in the electricity industry in Australia, USA and Canada.

Dr Sargent is a Fellow of the Institution who has served in many positions in the IEAust including Chairman of the Electrical & Com¬puting Branch of QLD Division 1976, Chairman of QLD Division 1984, member of Council 1984-86, Vice President of the Institution 1985-86 and also 1988, Deputy Chairman of the Electrical College Board 1988, Deputy President of the Institution 1989 and National President in 1990.
