Post Nominals for Chartered status - correct use and their implications
If you currently have Chartered status (CPEng, CEngT or CEngO) you have a number of options to ensure your post nominal accurately reflects your currency of practice as required by the Royal Charter under 5(a) and Bye-law 24.
- RETAIN the post nominal - if you have maintained your CPD, an unqualified post-nominal is the most accurate way to demonstrate your competency. For example, John Smith MIEAust CPEng.
- QUALIFY the post nominal - if you currently hold Chartered status but have not maintained your required 150 hours of CPD you can qualify your post nominal with a prefix that can take the form of either:
- CPEng (Retired) For example, John Smith MIEAust CPEng (Retired), or (Ret).
- CPEng (Year A - Year B), where Year A is the year you became entitled to use the Chartered post nominal, and Year B is the year in which the unqualified post nominal was relinquished. This also applies for use of CEngT or CEngO post nominals. For example, John Smith MIEAust CPEng (1996 - 2003).
- RELINQUISH - your third option is to relinquish the post nominal. Members have chosen this option but retained their membership status and relevant post nominal. For example, John Smith MIEAust.
It is important to remember that you are obliged to ensure that your use of the Chartered post nominal accurately reflects your currency of practice.
