Post Nominals for Chartered status - correct use and their implications

Chartered status stands for the highest standard of professionalism, up-to-date expertise, quality and safety, and the capacity to undertake independent practice. There is a community expectation that members of Engineers Australia will continue to keep pace with advancing knowledge and technology such that there can be continued confidence in engaging you.

If you currently have Chartered status (CPEng, CEngT or CEngO) you have a number of options to ensure your post nominal accurately reflects your currency of practice as required by the Royal Charter under 5(a) and Bye-law 24.

  • CPEng (Retired) For example, John Smith MIEAust CPEng (Retired), or (Ret).
  • CPEng (Year A - Year B), where Year A is the year you became entitled to use the Chartered post nominal, and Year B is the year in which the unqualified post nominal was relinquished. This also applies for use of CEngT or CEngO post nominals. For example, John Smith MIEAust CPEng (1996 - 2003).

It is important to remember that you are obliged to ensure that your use of the Chartered post nominal accurately reflects your currency of practice.
