What is a Volunteer?

A volunteer is any member or non-member who performs a task for us in an honorary capacity. Volunteer tasks include:

  • giving technical presentations
  • organising conferences
  • interviewing chartered applicants
  • presenting to schools
  • judging school competitions like EngQuest
  • judging Engineering Excellence Awards
  • hearing public complaints
  • accrediting undergraduate engineering programs

As a volunteer, you don't need to be inducted or comply with Engineers Australia's Office Bearer Code of Conduct, and there are no formal role descriptions. All we ask is that you complete the task you have volunteered for!

If you need any advice or pointers, the best place to start is with the division or technical society organising the event you are volunteering for. They will provide you with any guidelines or procedures that might be relevant.

What is an Office Bearer?

An office bearer is any member of one of our authorised committees, boards and groups, who undertakes the role in an honorary capacity, and for a set period of time.

Office bearers are either elected by a specific group of the membership, or appointed by an authorised committee. Each office bearer has a defined role and makes a significant contribution to our organisation, and how the public views us.

Office bearers are accountable to Council and need to comply with its Division Regulations as well as the Office Bearer Code of Conduct . To help new office bearers get a handle on everything, we provide a self-managed office bearer induction process, some office bearer training, and office bearer role descriptions.
