Engineering Associates

Engineering Associates are invited to contact the Registrar to advise of any known need for registration of engineering associates or of areas in which you practise where registration might deliver greater community protection. The concept of a register for Engineering Associates is supported in the Towards a Unified Registration System discussion paper on a unified registration system that has gained broad support in the Institution.

The National Engineering Technologists Register (NETR) exists to promote to government the competencies of engineering technologists and areas of practice in which they practise competently.

Registration on the NETR is available to individuals that have satisfied the National Generic Competency Standards for Stage 2 Engineering Technologists in their area of practice. The application process is designed to add value to individuals' practice skills by providing them an incentive to compile evidence for competency from their experience and to defend that evidence in front of their professional peers. However, persons whose highest academic qualification is an Associate Diploma would need to provide persuasive evidence of further education or achievement of enabling competencies in order to achieve registration.

Note

A handbook is available on line from Engineers Australia to guide your application, as the same process will also confer the status of Chartered Engineering Officer (CEngO) if it is completed successfully. The handbook explains how to compile your evidence, what will be the fees, where to send your application and who will be involved in the assessment. The handbook also gives the contact details of National Assessors who are prepared to discuss individual cases.

Note

It should be noted that NETR requires significantly greater support from Technologists and well qualified Associates (Officers) before it will command the attention of government regulators. Engineering Associates are invited to contact the Registrar to advise of any known need for registration of engineering technologists or of areas in which you practise where registration might deliver greater community protection.
