NPER is the main vehicle for the registration of professional engineers in Australia. It is widely recognised by Local Authorities and some State and Territory Governments and it has been included in regulations relating to the design, certification, health and safety of buildings and building services.
The requisite qualification for NPER is a four-year engineering qualification accredited by Engineers Australia or equivalent.
Applicants must also demonstrate that they are practising competently in the area of practice where they are applying for registration. Instructions on how to prepare evidence that demonstrates competencies is in the Chartered Status Handbook.
The required standard for competency is published as the
Stage 2 Australian Engineering Competency Standards
. However, most applicants will not need to refer to the primary document, as sufficient information is available from subordinate documents prepared to support the application process.
