Introduction

The National Engineering Registration Board (the Board) was established jointly by the Institution of Engineers, Australia (Engineers Australia), the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers, Australia (APESMA) and the Consult Australia. The Board, with representation from State and Territory Governments, Community Organisations and Professional Associations, supervises the operation of National Registers to ensure the community is provided with the protection it is entitled to expect in relation to work undertaken by those practitioners. These registers are:

The Registers are administered by Engineers Australia on behalf of relevant professional associations.

Currently almost 9,000 engineering practitioners are registered by the Board in 17 areas of practice throughout Australia and internationally.

Objective

The Board must provide for the engineering and related professions a registration system that safeguards the community.

The Regulation of Engineers

Since mid-2010, the National Engineering Registration Board (NERB) has been working with Engineers Australia, Consult Australia, APESMA and IPWEA to distil the case for national registration and to bring it to the attention of our political leaders. A brochure was distributed to all members of Engineers Australia through Engineers Australia magazine in February 2011 stating the case of engineering registration and outlining the proposed model for regulation.

State and Federal Government's agenda to deliver a Seamless National Economy gave us the opportunity to argue that consistent national registration of engineers should be included in its forward reform agenda to increase productivity, strengthen the economy and create jobs. NERB responded to a call for submissions on the Government's future reform agenda to cut red tape by consolidating our arguments into our submission, "The regulation of engineers - finding the right approach for a national economy" (see below).

The Board encourages you to read our publication and to get behind the initiative that is strongly supported by Engineers Australia and by the other engineering associations aligned with the NERB.

The Board has also provided a Summary Questions and Answers broadsheet to address key issues that come to mind. This will be updated from time to time. The Chairman of the Board, Rolfe Hartley introduces the publication in the video message below:
