NEAR Areas

1. General Areas of Practice

Engineering Associates on the National Engineering Associates Register (NEAR) are normally registered in at least one general area of practice, in which they satisfy the Australian Engineering Competency Standards Stage 2 - Engineering Associate.

Information on the general areas of practice on NEAR gives a reasonable indication of services likely to be delivered by registered Engineering Associates.

The number of general areas of practice is limited to twelve areas of practice to avoid excessive overlap between them. The scope of practice within each general area is defined by the Attributes of an Engineering Associate.

All registered engineering practitioners observe a common Code of Ethics, undertake to accept responsibility for outcomes only within their area of competence and specifically commit to keeping up-to-date through continuing professional development to support their engagement in delivering engineering services. They deliver engineering outcomes that minimise adverse social, economic and environmental consequences, with due regard for the safety, health and welfare of the community.

The National Engineering Registration Board ensures that the broader community, in whose interests NEAR has been established, is effectively represented in deciding how the register will be run.
