From 1 July 2008, a successful assessment of qualifications and competencies is required before lodging an application with the Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland for registration as a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ). This is a two-step process in line with the co-regulatory approach adopted by the Queensland Government in which approved professional bodies provide assessment services to the Board.
The Minister for Public Works, Housing and Information and Communication Technology has approved Engineers Australia and the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) as Assessment Entities.
An approved Assessment Entity will issue a letter of assessment, which should be lodged with an application to the Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland for registration as an RPEQ.
Engineers Australia will assess an engineer's qualifications and competencies in the following areas of engineering, as set out in its approved Assessment Scheme:
| aerospace | biomedical | building services | chemical | civil |
| electrical | environmental | management | mechanical | structural |
| naval architecture | ITEE |
