The Western Sydney Regional Group arranged for another CPEng Workshop to occur at the University of Western Sydney in the lecture theatre of the School of Engineering, Penrith Campus. Richard Hanna took charge of explaining to the 27 participants the process of applying for chartered status, along with registration on NPER. Referring to the engineering team, chartered status applies to engineers, technologists and engineering officers; in this workshop Richard concentrated on EPEng. Chartered status is the Stage 2 competency for an engineer. The advantages of chartered status were discussed along with the stages to complete to achieve chartered status. Two major parts were the engineering practice report and the professional interview. The engineering practice report typically consisted of several career episode reports covering a period of 3 to 4 years. Communication skills and the code of ethics were also addressed. The alternative pathway for matured experienced engineers was explained as well. Richard pointed out the need for continuing professional development once chartered status was achieved. Since the most difficult part of the process was the first step, participants were given time during the workshop to begin the process. More workshops are planned for later in the year.
