Engineering humanity’s future energy needs

The Sydney Morning Herald reports on Australian engineer Dr Saul Griffiths who has “invented a hand-held person-powered generator to charge mobile phones and laptops, a new method of producing cheap corrective lenses and his own line of kite-surfing equipment.”

The paper reports “he is perhaps most proud of his work with Makani Power, a company creating airborne wind turbines that soar like kites, up to a kilometre into the atmosphere, and harness strong winds to generate electricity. In fact he is now focused almost solely on humanity's future energy needs.”

Based in San Francisco, Griffiths was in Sydney to speak about energy use at the TEDx conference, “a forum for new, inspirational ideas that attracts speakers from around the world”.
