Engineering reputation in jeopardy: Dyson chief

"This has always been a great engineering home," said Martin McCourt in an interview with The Weekend Australian. But now, Australia was in danger of losing that because of what he described as a "real skills gap".

"You've got 6000 coming out of university and you actually need 20,000," he said.

Dyson is best known for inventing the bagless vacuum cleaner and is the leading vacuum cleaning product in Australia. Its founder, James Dyson, has been a global public advocate for Western countries to address skills shortage in engineering and science.

Last year, he was invited by Britain's Conservative Party to submit a white paper on how to address the country's chronic skills imbalance. Among the recommendations were education reforms and greater research and development tax relief for hi-tech companies, small businesses and start-ups.
