Engineers Australia supports rigorous review of facts around flooding

A significant amount of speculation has occurred on what should or should not have been done in managing the recent floods within Queensland and how to avoid future flooding. The true story surrounding the floods will only be known once all of the facts have been gathered and reviewed.

The Queensland Division President of Engineers Australia, Dennis Wogan, said that Engineers Australia fully supports the establishment of the Commission of Inquiry to undertake this process and provide a full and detailed account of the circumstances surrounding the recent Queensland floods.

"Considering the complex technical and social issues involved, premature speculation regarding these floods does not assist in the recovery process and may inhibit those, whether individuals or organisations, attempting to manage it.

"Engineers Australia has offered its support to the authorities coordinating the response to the floods, in particular in facilitating access to relevant engineering expertise.

"We are also working with a number of related industry organisations to ensure that support,
when requested, can be provided in a coordinated manner.

"At this stage it is important to focus on the immediate rectification works and to gather the
necessary information upon which to carry out a thorough and objective analysis of what
improvements should be made to long term planning, infrastructure and processes," Dennis
Wogan concluded.
