Georgiou was the first construction company in Australia to develop a Reconciliation Action Plan. During the evening of the Civil Contractors Federation Awards night, they were presented with all the awards for the Indigenous category.

Chief Executive Officer John Georgiou said winning the awards in the Indigenous category is a reflection of the commitment to building and maintaining Indigenous relationships through training and employment programs, an outcome of the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

“Our Indigenous Employment Program was developed in September 2009 with the program commencing in February 2010.

“In partnership with Skill Hire and Civil Train, the program delivers a curriculum covering life and technical skills with candidates completing units from the Certificate III in Civil Construction.

“Indigenous employees have worked across several Georgiou Operations from Infrastructure, Engineering, Precast, Plant, Mining Services, Risk and Human Resources.

“An outcome of our commitment to Indigenous development is the success we celebrate with rising stars like Kristopher Barton.

“We have identified a future leader,” said Mr Georgiou.

Indigenous Trainee of the Year Kristopher Barton is a Civil Construction worker and is working on the Finucane Island water main relocation project in Port Hedland. Kris was recognised as the award worthy candidate, through his leadership potential; his ability to demonstrate continued learning and enthusiasm for his industry.

“The awards night was fantastic; I did not expect to win.

“I still have 18 months to go on my traineeship but I look forward to completing my Certificate,” said Mr Barton.

Georgiou has signed the Aboriginal Employment Covenant (AEC) committing to 300 jobs over 10 years as part of this initiative.

Georgiou currently employ approximately 700 staff with Indigenous employees totalling 43, this equates to 6% of the total workforce. Georgiou aims to have 10% of their overall workforce from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage.
