Insulation code revision needed?
Following recent deaths involving installers of metal foil insulation in residential buildings there are calls for a review of AS3999.1992 (installation requirements)
Colin Blair, the Acting CEO of Standards Australia, has canvassed stakeholders and proposes four alternative actions with regard to AS3999-1992:
- Withdraw the standard
- Amend AS3999-1992 to substitute clause 4.2(e) with the requirements of the Wiring Rules-AS/NZS3000 clause 4.5.2.3;
- Undertake a comprehensive review of AS3999-1992, updating the standard where needed, including establishing tested and scientifically based requirements for safe insulation installation around recessed luminaires, which outcome might not necessarily be the same as provisions under the Wiring Rules; or
- take no action.
Views on the above alternatives are invited from members of Engineers Australia,
