Humanitarian operations are always part of any conflict, and the ADF has legal obligations to ameliorate human suffering under the Geneva Conventions and various international treaties. Each of the services (Navy, Army, Air Force) is supported by uniformed engineers. The wider Department of Defence has engineers, largely in the Defence Materiel Organisation and Defence Support Group, and there are a number of highly specialised engineering companies which provide deeper level support to ADF capabilities. All these engineers contribute to ADF humanitarian operations, but this article concentrates on three areas of humanitarian contributions: assistance to our indigenous community, supporting the Australian response to international disasters, and meeting the humanitarian need in Afghanistan.
