Make it so: Floating bio-digester
Students at the University of Queensland want to design and build a floating bio-digester to convert waste into usable methane gas for cooking.
They were inspired by the communities living in floating villages on and around the Tonle Sap—the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia. Given there is a lack of toilets in these communities, the students hope a floating toilet system will address this issue while also generating energy.
To highlight the work these students are undertaking, and track their progress, Engineers Australia has donated a hand-held video camera to the group. The students will post their video updates as well as written blogs to the ‘Year of Humanitarian Engineering’ blog portal.
