Population growth: do you have a (engineering) solution?

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers in the UK has launched a competition for young engineers to develop sustainable engineering solutions to the challenges posed by ever expanding populations.

It follows the launch in January of a report entitled Population: One Planet, Too Many People? The report looked at the challenges of providing food, water, urbanisation and energy through sustainable solutions, to the end of the century.

Following the success of the report, a competition was launched for small teams of 4-6 young engineers to submit a short technical brief on how their country could sustainably meet the changing needs of its demographics.

It is hoped the competition will highlight the contribution engineering can make to the challenges of population growth in the 21st century.

The competition has two rounds with a grand final scheduled for 23 November 2011.
