Response to National Disasters from the National President

Dear Members,

As might be expected we have received many requests from those of you who wish to contribute in various ways to the devastating natural disasters occurring around the nation. I would like to thank and acknowledge those individuals and organisations who have expressed their desire to assist.

At this stage of the crisis Engineers Australia will not be taking a role in coordinating or directing volunteers or resources. As you will appreciate any response to these disasters requires complex organisation and coordination across many expert agencies with established and legislated emergency roles. We must not be tempted to try to duplicate these, however well-intended.

Similarly, it is not our function to become an intermediary in the relief funds arena. If you wish to volunteer your services in any way please have a look at the Volunteering Australia website (volunteeringaustralia.org.au) or contact your State Government for further information.

There is little doubt that the path to recovery will be long and arduous and one that will involve and challenge many of us for months and years to come.

Regards
Merv Lindsay
National President
