Scholarship provides a helping hand

The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) is offering $2500 scholarships via its Go WEST (Women in Engineering, Science and Technology) program to female part-time off-campus students experiencing financial hardship.

The scholarship is valued at $2500 per year over four years, awarded for one year initially.

To be eligible to apply, students must be from a non-metropolitan area in Queensland and experiencing some financial hardship.

Tamara Cusack is one USQ student who was recently awarded a Go WEST Equity and Social Justice Scholarship.

Cusack enrolled in USQ's Associate Degree in Engineering, majoring in civil engineering, with the aim of continuing on to complete the Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) degree.

The 21-year-old is now undertaking work experience with the Townsville City Council in Planning and Development, completing engineering assessments of detailed designs relating to urban development projects.

"Eventually, I hope to use my degree to become a project engineer, coordinating between various technical disciplines on civil infrastructure projects," she said.

Applications for the scholarship close Friday 29 October.
