TransGrid congratulates winners of 2011 Great Engineering Challenge

TransGrid, the NSW transmission network operator and sponsor of the 2011 Great Engineering Challenge has congratulated the winners of this year’s event.

TransGrid Central Region Manager, Mr Ian Davidson presented at the awards, which had a record breaking number of female students competing.

“As a proud sponsor, TransGrid was excited to see more than 85 female students embrace engineering and compete in this year’s Great Engineering Challenge,” said Mr Davidson.

“I would like to congratulate the girls from MLC Burwood on winning the TransGrid Challenge,” he said.

“We had more than 150 students competing to design a water turbine from a limited number of resource materials in just 40 minutes.

” The TransGrid Challenge was designed to show the students the possibilities of renewable energy, especially in the form of hydropower.

The Year 10 and 11 students completed three different engineering challenges during the day. Students were faced with traditional engineering problems such as bridge building and the construction of the water turbine, as well as a lateral and strategic thinking component.

Randwick Boys High School was the overall winners impressing the judges in all three categories.

Mr Gary Calfarola, Australian Engineering Week Chairman said the Great Engineering Challenge was a great opportunity for the students to get their heads out of the text books and experience some hands on engineering examples.

“It gives students a chance to see how engineering is involved in all kinds of day-to-day things, it’s not just about building roads or bridges,” said Mr Calafarola.

TransGrid’s NSW transmission network connects to more than 4000 Mega Watts of renewable energy, including wind and hydro power.
