UWA Professor announced 2011 WA Division President
Professor Mark Bush FIEAust CPEng was announced 2011 President of Engineers Australia WA Division at a special function held at the University Club of Western Australia last night.
Professor Bush graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) with Honours from the University of Queensland in 1979 and then completed a PhD at the University of Sydney.
In 1984 he took up the post of Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Western Australia and was promoted to Professor in 1998. He has lectured in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, computational mechanics and materials engineering.
He served as Head of the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering from 1998 to 2001 and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Computing and Mathematics from 2003 to 2007.
He is currently a Professor of Engineering at UWA supervising research into biomedical materials and engineering education and is also Director, Animal Research Services.
In this role he has responsibility for the development and provision of facilities across the UWA campus and two local hospitals used for biomedical research using animals. This role links to his own research interests in biomaterials and bioengineering, and a personal interest in animal welfare.
Professor Bush has received awards for both undergraduate teaching and research supervision, and was included in the Engineers Australia list of “Top 100 most influential Engineers”, 2004, and Engineers Australia’s “Engineering Elite” survey, 2003.
His research interests include computational and experimental studies of physical phenomena in both fluid and solid systems, and in biomedical materials. He has published over 130 research papers.
He has a particular interest in Engineering Education, has published in this field and has supervised a PhD project in generic competencies required by practicing engineers.
While serving as Dean, Professor Bush led a number of developments to improve engineering education at UWA, including the establishment of the Renewable Energy Vehicle project and continuing support for the successful UWA Motorsport (Formula SAE).
He was also involved in the establishment of the WA Energy Research Alliance, and initially led UWA’s involvement in the Alliance and established UWA as part of the prestigious Chevron University Partnerships Programme, joining a small number of leading Universities worldwide.
Professor Bush is a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng), Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia (FIEAust), and Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (FTSE).
