UWA Technical Fault sees UNSW Triumph!

Scores were dead even between the teams from UNSW and the University of Western Australia after the first round at the 2007 Warman Design-and-Build Competition National Final held Sunday 23rd September at the Powerhouse Museum Sydney. UNSW had a near perfect second round run and the pressure was on the UWA team – unfortunately a last minute technical fault saw the UWA device stop short of the finishing area leaving the UNSW team jumping for joy at their win of the 2007 Warman Trophy and $1000 prize care of the Competition Sponsors, Weir Minerals Australia Ltd.

Coming in third were the RMIT University boys. A Judges award for style in design was awarded to the team from the University of Southern Queensland.

The Warman Design-and-Build Competition, now in its 20th Year, sees 2nd year Mechanical Engineering Students from across Australia and New Zealand design and build devices to a specification set each year as part of their undergraduate degree programs. The 2007 project required students to build a device that would deploy emergency response packs (wiffle balls) into the leaks (holes) of the pond (raised bordered area of track), collect monitoring equipment (golf balls) in the pond and then transport safely to the other end of the track. It was a challenging project but the ingenuity of the students was evident with everything from lego to aluminium and toy truck parts used as materials.

60 students from 17 universities descended on Sydney following their wins at their Campus trials to compete in the National Final. Students enjoyed a cruise on Sydney Harbour along with persons from Engineers Australia & Weir Minerals Australia Ltd to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Competition. Students also toured the Weir Minerals Artarmon premises to see behind the scenes of one of the world’s leading mining equipment manufacturers.
