Victoria’s Young Professional Engineer of the Year Recipient 2011

Victoria’s 2011 Young Professional Engineer Award was announced at the Victorian Engineering Excellence Awards Presentation Dinner at the Palladium Ballroom, Crown Towers in Melbourne on 22 September.

Mr Gavin Chater, Project Delivery Leader and Acting Manager – Property and Buildings Market Sector (Victoria) at GHD, was named Young Professional Engineer of the Year for 2011.

Gavin has displayed a high level of competence and significant achievement in engineering and community affairs. He is now eligible for the National Young Professional Engineer Award 2011.

Gavin has excelled in his role as Project Delivery Leader and Acting Manager – Property and Buildings Market Sector (Victoria) at GHD. His well-rounded leadership skills in leading projects both here and overseas and diverse engineering and community engagement, along with his demonstrated problem-solving skills and commitment to creative and innovative solutions, pleased the judges.

Gavin has held key leadership and management roles on several extensive projects, including Heathrow Terminal 5 and the White City Retail / Rail Interchange Precinct, both in London, and a renovation of the Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower Facility at Avalon Airport.

Gavin is committed to serving his profession and community; he has served as Treasurer of the Victorian Chapter of the Centre for Engineering Leadership and Management (VicCELM) and also mentors coaching project personnel and other aspiring engineers as part of Young Engineers Victoria’s Chartership Status Study Group scheme.

Mr Paul Collier, State President of Engineers Australia, Victoria Division and part of the judging panel, said: “Gavin's maturity and professionalism, together with his tenacity and commitment to be a leader and use his experiences to encourage other young engineers to be active in the profession, impressed the judges.”

The Award, proudly supported by VicRoads, acknowledges and rewards young engineering professionals who have realised competence and significant achievement in community affairs; a demonstrated understanding of the role and purpose of the engineering profession in society; proficiency in the use of communication skills in engineering projects; and effective communication with public media.

Engineers Australia, Victoria Division, would like to congratulate Gavin on this significant achievement.
