WA projects win national awards

WA engineering firms have again demonstrated their expertise by winning two out of six major awards at the 2011 Australian Engineering Excellence Awards held this week in Canberra.

The winning projects are:

  • Utah Point multi-user bulk export facility, constructed by the Port Hedland Port Authority and the PINC Group, and
  • The State Theatre Centre, submitted by Airey Taylor Consulting.

The project involves a new port berth at Utah Point on Finucane Island which is a bulk commodity export berth catering for smaller resource companies, allowing them to access export markets.

The facility has exceeded performance expectations by achieving full operations within the first six months, delivering export sales of approximately $1.5 billion per annum.

The award was accepted by Warren Farrow, Port Development Manager with the Port Hedland Port Authority; and Neil Parker, Managing Director of the PINC Group.

With the State Theatre Centre in Northbridge, Airey Taylor Consulting had to overcome several unique challenges.

Large portions of the centre were submerged beneath the water table and adjacent to road and rail networks. The new structure also had to account for low vibration, noise and humidity in a small building footprint surrounded by heritage buildings.

The award was accepted by Bassam Matty, Senior Associate of Airey Taylor Consulting.
