Water and Australian Cities

Urban communities are being constantly reminded about water shortages through the moral suasion exerted by civic and political leaders. More recently, the obvious tensions between the Commonwealth and the States and Territories on water matters have added to a growing sense of concern. Water is the life-blood of modern lifestyles and many social norms have developed around its availability. There is now a view that water reform is as much about social reform as the economic and physical options being put forward by policy makers and water providers. In this Report, Engineers Australia reviews urban water use in Australia and the urban water reform process. The Report also establishes a perspective on how much has been achieved and what more needs to be done to secure Australian urban water supplies. A secondary objective of the Report is to inform the community and members about the elements of water reform and how far they have progressed.
