Water engineering in a changing world to be the focus of international congress - Brisbane 27 June
Around 800 Australian and international water engineering experts will come together in Brisbane for a week from next Monday 27 June to address the central roles of hydraulic engineering, hydrology and water resources in our changing world.
Engineers Australia has joined with the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research to host the congress which will be addressed and opened by Her Excellency, Ms Penelope Wensley AC, Governor of Queensland, at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from 8:30am on Monday 27 June.
The Chair of the organising committee, Professor Hubert Chanson, said, “A balance is continually being sought between competing values in water engineering, including the environment, the economy, tourism, social and indigenous values, health aspects, aesthetics and the needs for future generations.
“Careful management and innovative solutions are required to balance these values and solutions must be able to deal with the uncertainty in the natural world as well as the changing human world.”
The congress will cover a wide range of presentations based on experiences and research around issues including floods, droughts, coastal areas and ports, dams and reservoirs, lakes, tsunamis and hydraulic structures and machinery.
There will be examples and discussions around many current and past Australian and international issues, locations and events.
Some specifics will relate to mitigating flood impacts, drought planning and management, meteorological forecasting, and rainfall and run-off modelling.
Coastal issues will include tidal estuaries, wave energy, and effects of waves produced by ships in port areas.
Also there will be a range of presentations around adapting to the impacts the climate change.
