What resources were taken into account when formulating the draft revised Code of Ethics?

The discussion draft revised Code of Ethics has been informed from a range of sources, including:

  1. an analysis of the Code of Ethics 2000 by the Professional Associations Research Network (PARN), a research–based organisation in the UK of which Engineers Australia is a member (click here to read the full report)
  2. a comprehensive review of the codes of ethics/conduct of other occupational associations for engineering and non-engineering professions, as well as the codes of a range of private and public sector organisations, in Australia and overseas
  3. various reports, presentations and academic papers about ethics in the professions
  4. three focus group workshops of members of Engineers Australia from industry, academia, Council, National Congress and other key stakeholder groups
  5. legal advice on codes and ethical conduct matters.

From our research four core principles have emerged to be taken into account when developing a code – accessibility, clarity, consistency and comprehensiveness. We expect that the proposed revised code will meets each of these.
