2 years on: AEEA award-winning Ludmilla Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade Wednesday, 15 June 2016

Since winning the biennial Overall Project Award at the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards Northern 2014 for its $25 million Ludmilla Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade, Power and Water Corporation has implemented the knowledge gained throughout the project in the delivery of other capital works.

The largest sewage project ever undertaken by Power and Water Corporation, the upgrade has enabled diversion of macerated raw sewage from the decommissioned Larrakeyah Outfall for further treatment via the upgraded treatment plant, catering for future population growth within the existing catchment until 2030.

Senior Engineer for Power and Water Corporation Skefos Tsoukalis said that since winning the Overall Project Award, other projects have benefited from the knowledge and information gained during the upgrade’s construction.

“Winning the 2014 Overall Project Award for the Ludmilla Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade was a great honour for Power and Water Corporation,” Mr Tsoukalis said. “The knowledge and information gathered throughout the project has provided Power and Water Corporation with valuable information that has allowed for improved processes, which have been utilised in the delivery of a number of other capital works projects.”

The successful augmentation works increased the robustness of the plant and allowed its optimisation to vastly improve the treatment and environmental outcomes, while boosting dry weather and, more significantly, wet weather performance.

The project showcased a number of contemporary engineering practices and key achievements, including positive environmental outcomes for the local environment and no disruption in the service to customers or treatment during the entire construction period, including the challenging wet season.
