2015 Chair’s Report: ITEE Victorian Branch Wednesday, 13 January 2016

2015 was another busy and exciting year for Engineers Australia’s ITEE Victorian Branch.

The Committee

The Engineers Australia ITEE Victorian Branch Committee formally met six times in 2015 (February, April, June, August, October, and December), with a quorum achieved in all meetings. All the approved minutes are available upon request.

During the year, the following roles were appointed:

  • Chair: Philip McGill MIEAust
  • Deputy Chair: Dr Craig Watkins MIEAust
  • Treasurer: John Ambrose MIEAust CPEng NER
  • Innovation Coordinator: Glen Gould MIEAust

December saw the committee finish up with 19 members!

CPD Activity

During the year thirteen CPD activities were delivered by the committee and partnering organisations IET and IEEE (jointly known as EEEVic with Engineers Australia ITEE Victorian Branch).

The topics of these sessions ranged from innovation in ICT, to spectrum management to robotics automation. For an overview of the 2015 CPD program, click here.

Special Interest Sub Committees

NBN Working Group

The NBN Working Group, formed in 2013, continued to research and collate an issues paper.

Spectrum Management

The committee formed a special interest sub-committee focusing on spectrum management. This group will follow the evolution of spectrum including the Internal Telecommunication Union World Radiocommunication Conference 2015 (ITU WRC15) and the review of the spectrum legislation.

A CPD session on spectrum management was also hosted in 2015 to share the knowledge on this topic with the ITEE membership and profession.

Innovation

The committee identified the need for continuous innovation in ICT and appointed an Innovation Coordinator. During the year several, highly attended, CPD sessions were dedicated to this topic.

Cyber Issues

The Cyber Issues Working Group met several times during the year to find a position for the committee on this important issue. Several CPD sessions were hosted by the group to inform the profession of the current issues and threats in the cyber world.

2016 Planning

The committee has planned and confirmed the 2016 CPD program. We encourage all members to participate in these sessions, especially those who have recently joined the National Engineering Register (NER). Find out what’s on the program.

The special interest sub-committees will continue to develop their positions on their topics and also host CPD activities to ensure the wider membership and profession stay up-to-date. It is important for the ITEE industry to be engaged and build up a strong posture and assert our independent professional voice.

The committee will also continue collaborating with IET and IEEE as part of EEEVic, and strengthen relationships with industry.

I would like to personally thank the committee for making 2015 a very successful year, it is only through their dedication that we are able to offer a diverse and interesting CPD program.

If you have any ideas, CPD suggestions, or time to get involved with the committee, we want to hear from you! Please contact us on [email protected].

Lastly, I encourage you all to visit the new state-of-the-art Engineers Australia facilities at 600 Bourke Street in Melbourne. There are many spaces to have formal and informal meetings, catch up on some work before a CPD session, or even just have a coffee!

I look forward to meeting with you in 2016.
