AEEA Queensland 2016 overall winner Thursday, 22 September 2016

Brisbane's Flood Recovery Ferry Terminals scooped the prestigious RW Hawken Overall Project Award at the recent Australian Engineering Excellence Awards (AEEA) Queensland 2016.

Following the 2011 Brisbane floods, the Queensland Government ran a global competition resulting in Aurecon and Cox Rayner Architects being appointed to deliver new, flood-resilient ferry terminals.

Engineers Australia Queensland General Manager Ian McEwan was impressed by the project’s synthesis of elements never previously considered for ferry terminals, creating a new standard in intelligent terminal design.

Importantly, the project’s innovative design features usher in resilience and longevity, even in the face of natural disasters, allowing the terminals to be returned to operation shortly after significant flood events,” Mr McEwan said.

“Engineers Australia congratulates Aurecon and Cox Rayner Architects for the ingenuity and innovation of their design, which is a reflection of a uniquely strong collaboration between maritime and mechanical engineers and the architectural discipline.”

The RW Hawken Award’s presenter Minister for Housing and Public Works Hon Michael de Brenni said that the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards (AEEA) Queensland are important for the state because they publicly acknowledge the critical contribution that engineers make to the viability of our communities.

“All of the nominees and winners of tonight’s awards are unsung heroes of the Queensland economy and the Palaszczuk government is pleased to take every opportunity to recognise the engineering profession’s contribution,” Mr de Brenni said.

“The Queensland government is committed to delivering a pipeline of infrastructure work throughout the state and we are confident that Engineers Australia Queensland members will play an integral role in the delivery of these projects.”

Aurecon’s Technical Director of Resources and Manufacturing Services Arne Nilsen MIEAust CPEng NER said that the awards are “a fantastic recognition from our profession.”

“They place an important focus on future-focussed, intelligent design and engineering and encourage engineers to imagine what could be to bring our clients’ ideas to life,” Mr Nilsen said.

“United in our profession, we share and celebrate the achievements of our teams and industry peers.”

The Brisbane's Flood Recovery Ferry Terminals project also took home Excellence Awards for the Innovation, Research and Development and Project Infrastructure categories.

350 people attended the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards (AEEA) Queensland on Thursday 8 September 2016 at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre, where more than 60 project and individual submissions were showcased.

All Queensland Excellence Award winners are eligible to enter the national Australian Engineering Excellence Awards on 23 November 2016 in Brisbane during the Australian Engineering Conference.
