Breaking through professional borders Friday, 12 February 2016

Young professionals often wonder what engineers or planners, for example, would do in the different interfacing parts of a project, and how we can work together more effectively to achieve a better solution. Although these disciplines work together every day, there are very few industry events that focus on networking and knowledge-sharing between them.

Young Engineers Australia Sydney created a platform to address this concern by hosting their inaugural Young Professionals Christmas Function set at Pier One on Sydney Harbour last December. The event was a perfect setting for over 300 professionals from planners, lawyers, management consultants, architects and engineers, to enjoy a unique and rare networking opportunity.

Engineers Australia's Young Engineers and Women in Engineering partnered with eight other professional associations and four company sponsors to make this event possible. Our deepest appreciation goes to following associations for getting involved in knowledge sharing:

  • Society of Construction Law
  • Australian Institute of Architects
  • Planning Institute of Australia
  • Institute of Management Consultants
  • Urban Land Institute
  • Property Developers Association
  • Institute of Engineering and Technology
  • Engineers without Borders
  • Cardno
  • Advisian
  • Experts Direct
  • Chambers Russell Lawyers

At a time where collaboration and professional connections are as important as ever, this night was all about establishing those connections and to widen our spheres of knowledge. It presents an opportunity for young professionals to differentiate themselves and set the standard for the future.

Making the christmas function a fun engagement, many prizes awarded during the event including best-dressed male and female. The prizes were supported by Endota Spa Martin Place, Tooheys Brewery, and Underwater Scooter Tours.

This event was also a ‘curtain-raiser ‘for a number of planned upcoming joint-events between the professional associations involved, designed to further our knowledge of different disciplines and how they fit into the piece of the environment we work and live in. The committees of the respective associations were able to interact and strengthen their connections. A number of these initiatives have already started to gain momentum in 2016.
