Georgiou on track to take out constructions largest award Monday, 13 February 2017

Georgiou Group, along with five other Australian contractors, has been selected as a finalist in the 2017 Australian Construction Achievement Award (ACAA).

The Aubin Grove Train Station and Russell Road Upgrade involved the construction of the first island rail platform and concourse station to be built within live rail in Western Australia, Perth’s largest carpark (2000 bays), duplication of the Russell Road Bridge and associated roadworks.

Chief Executive Officer John Georgiou said the project was delivered under an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process, followed by design and construct contracts.

“Under the ECI process, we had the opportunity to work closely with the client to provide advice on design, constructability, detailed programming and ongoing budget preparation. It was through this process that we were able to investigate options to upgrade nearby Russell Road to satisfy future road user demands associated with the new station,” he explained.

“As a result of the ECI process, Georgiou was able to shave approximately 12-months off the client’s estimated project delivery cycle through the prefabrication of modularised station building elements and close attention to project management.”

Mr Georgiou said the project, which employed approximately 250 personnel at peak, presented a number of unique challenges.

“Challenges faced on the project include working between two live and fully operational 22kV rail lines sitting within a multi-lane freeway, heavy lifts for station elements over electrified equipment, severe space constraints, a fast and relentless program and limited freeway closures,” he explained.

“The project team did an incredible job to deliver this project on time, on budget and safely. What they were able to achieve in three freeway shutdowns is admirable and through innovation and strong project management, we were able to deliver public infrastructure that will significantly improve Perth’s rail network.”

ACA’s Executive Director Lindsay Le Compte said the projects have delivered world class construction outcomes and solutions for their clients.

“The breadth of skills and innovation involved in these projects showcases the capacity of the industry and its ability to adapt to differing client requirements”, he said.

The ACA is the peak industry body representing leading construction companies while Engineers Australia represents the engineering profession that is responsible along with the constructors for the design and delivery of Australia’s major infrastructure projects.

The winner will be announced in May 2017 in Sydney.
