International opportunities for Australian engineering graduates Thursday, 28 July 2016

Engineers make a huge difference to the world around them. Engineering companies around the world are now on the lookout for Australian qualified engineers to take advantage of exciting engineering opportunities.

In line with Engineers Australia’s vision to be “the global home for engineering professionals, international industry developments are closely monitored to provide the best prospects for our members.

China has been identified as one of the new growth countries with the recently released “Belt and Road” initiative by the Chinese Government. It will see significant investments in infrastructure projects and will be underpinned by the establishment of the $40 billion Silk Road Fund, the $100 billion Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank and the $100 billion New Development Bank. The China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA), which came into force in December 2015, demonstrates that China is serious about working with Australian companies.

Engineers Australia has international chapters supporting over 5,600 members currently employed outside Australia. Some of our overseas Chapters have become pivotal points of focus for the large number of Australians living in these regions. It is estimated that there are over 80,000 Australian passport holders living in Hong Kong and 23,000 Australians in the UAE. Additionally, approximately 100,000 Singaporeans have been educated in Australia.

Engineers Australia Careers Manager Jennifer O’Donovan said rapport building, self-assurance, flexibility and adaptability are some of the key skills you need to have to succeed in the global market.

“You also need to have sensitivity to the needs of others, a desire to learn and help others learn as well as holistic thinking to reach leadership levels in your global career,” Ms O’Donovan said.

On 17 August 2016, Engineers Australia will be holding an online panel discussion to explore the overseas engineering opportunities available for Australian graduates. Engineers Australia International Manager Phoebe Tan will be hosting the panel, focusing on the engineering industries in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, the UAE, Qatar and the UK.
