The Mercury is proud to support engineering in Tasmania and is looking forward to the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards (AEEA) Tasmania 2016 presentation event and congratulate them on their partnership with The Beacon Foundation.

The Mercury, along with its sister newspapers at News Corp Australia, on Saturday, August 20 launched the “5000 jobs in 50 days” campaign, which is aimed at helping young people to find their first job. It is important to assist young people to get their first foot in the door to provide the start they need to start their career.

National youth unemployment is a major issue. Last month 280,900 people aged 15 to 24 were out of work. To help connect jobseekers with work the “5000 jobs in 50 days” campaign is calling on employers to consider whether they really need an experienced worker when they hire someone or could they instead employ an inexperienced job seeker to give a young person a start.

In Tasmania, the youth unemployment rate is just over 15%. This is more than double the state’s average jobless rate of 6.2% and the highest in the nation.

How do we give young people hope and businesses a future workforce that’s motivated and work ready?

Simple. We’re asking big, medium and small businesses to open their collective doors to young Australians. 5000 young Australians. Let’s provide that all important first foot in the door for the next generation.

News Corp Australia, along with the Mercury, is allocating $1 million in advertising space to jobs for young people. We are also providing 250 young people with internships.

Let’s give young people a chance. Email us at [email protected] and tell us about the roles your business has for first time job seekers or call us on (03) 6230 0400 to place a first job seekers ad. Help us get young Australians working.
