Tasmania's role in the global engineering supply chain Thursday, 15 December 2016

Engineers Australia, Tasmania is launching a Workforce Development Project to support the capacity for Tasmanian engineers to operate effectively within global supply chains and is seeking participation from local companies.

The project is a response to Engineers Australia’s Workforce Development Plan for the Tasmanian engineering profession.

Engineers Australia’s Tasmania General Manager, Dr Vicki Gardiner said it was supported by the Tasmanian Department of State Growth through Skills Tasmania.

 “The Tasmanian engineering profession is now competing, collaborating and supplying services to an international field,” Dr Gardiner said.

“This impacts on the skill set needed for engineers to survive and thrive in this market place.”

Dr Gardiner said the Workforce Development Project involves developing an understanding of the role of engineering in global supply chains.

“We will identify strategies to develop the local education and training industry capacity to deliver the skills the Tasmanian engineering profession requires to operate globally, including piloting skill-based responses.”

Engineers Australia is now seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from companies to participate in the project. This would involve:

  • sharing experiences and challenges faced with consultants;
  • providing feedback on the issues raised;
  • contributing to the development of a skills-based pilot program to support local companies; and
  • participating in the skills-based pilot program.

The consultation phase of this project is scheduled for February 2017.
