Chartered Status

Chartered Status is exclusive to Engineers Australia. Professional engineers with Chartered Status enjoy recognition  by government, business and the general public worldwide.

About Chartered Status

Chartered Status certifies that you practice in a competent, independent and ethical manner; and indicates you are a leader in your field.

Chartered Status represents:

  • The highest standards of professionalism
  • Leadership
  • Up-to-date expertise
  • Quality and safety
  • The ability to undertake independent practice.

Chartered Status is open to those in the Member and Fellow grades of each occupational category:
  • Professional Engineer – Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng)
  • Engineering Technologist – Chartered Engineering Technologist (CEngT)
  • Engineering Officers – Chartered Engineering Officer (CEngO).

Members can check their CPEng status by logging in as a Member. On MyPage, select "Update My Contact Details" and then "Membership".  Against "Chartered Status" it will state Not Current or give a date if the Member is a current CPEng.

How to apply

To apply, you must be able to demonstrate specified competencies at experienced practitioner) level (Stage 2 competency). The Chartered Status application process is a competency-based assessment with two steps:

  • The preparation of an Engineering Practice Report linking your work experience to the Stage 2 engineering competencies
  • A professional interview conducted by senior practitioners from the area of practice.

The current assessment fee for Chartered Status is AUD$550 (inc GST). This fee is not refundable.

Re-admission to Chartered Status

This depends on how long your membership has been lapsed.

Less than 6 months
Former Chartered members whose Engineers Australia membership has lapsed for less than 6 months will be readmitted to Chartered Status automatically upon receipt of a completed "Request for Chartered Status (current year) Including Re-Admission to Chartered Status" form.

Greater than 6 months but less than 5 years
Former Chartered members whose membership has lapsed for more than 6 months but less than 5 years will be required to apply for readmission by completing the requirements in the "Request for Chartered Status (current year) Including Re-Admission to Chartered Status" form.

Greater than 5 years
Former Chartered members whose membership has lapsed for more than 5 years will be required to complete the Chartered Status assessment application process. Please refer to the Chartered Status handbook.
