Professional Development Program
Important Notice: Changes to the Professional Development Program due to eChartered
From the 1st July 2012, many of the operations of the Professional Development Program will occur via the eChartered online system. PDP Partners have received information about the specific changes via formal letter and information sessions are taking place through March. The PDP Newsletter is a key communication for updates on eChartered, for both Coordinators and Participants. We will continue to provide transition information as the launch approaches.
For information about eChartered, including transition dates, please visit the eChartered website.
What is the Professional Development Program (PDP)?
The Professional Development Program (PDP) is a program designed to assist you to develop the competencies required to practise at the level of Chartered practicioner using a structured and supported method.
If you are working for an organisation, the PDP involves Engineers Australia working with your employer to provide you with a framework for career planning and development through the opportunity of continuous assessment and feedback whilst you are working towards your Chartered Status.
You need to be a member of Engineers Australia at the Graduate (or higher) phase of your career in order to participate on the program. The PDP is often a five-year process which can be divided into short and manageable periods of professional formation.
The program is open to engineering team members across all fields and all types of enterprise and the industries covered include mining, utilities, consulting, aerospace, defence, automation, information technology, telecommunications, processing, manufacturing, construction and federal, state and local government.
Currently, there are about 7,000 engineers and 350 organisations participating in the Engineers Australia PDP.
What are the benefits of the PDP?
Benefits for PDP Partner Organisations
By allowing your employees to participate on the PDP, you are encouraging them to gain Chartered Status which will improve and develop the professional status and international mobility of your engineering team. The process for attaining Chartered Status is not a simple process, which is why the PDP provides a structured framework of professional formation for your engineering team members that can be used by your Organisation to support, or as a basis for other Learning & Development programs. In addition, Organisations that sign up to the program have access to a PDP Partner logo promoting them as an employer of choice. A PDP Partner Organisation is also entitled to a 10% discount on in-house training courses provided by Engineering Education Australia.
Benefits for individual or organisation participants
Participation on the PDP provides you with ongoing and active support for your Chartered Status journey via workshops, presentations and online material which will assist you in your career development and planning. The program offers you continuous assessment through feedback from Engineers Australia National Accredited Assessors and more manageable periods of professional formation. You are also given the opportunity to undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) which allows you to focus on new developments in the profession to support your Chartered Status.

ActewAGL

ActewAGL was set up in October 2000 when the Australian Gas Light Company (AGL), and ACTEW Corporation, an ACT Government owned enterprise, entered into Australia’s first utility joint venture. Following October 2006 business dealings between AGL and Alinta, ownership of ActewAGL’s retail arm was shared equally between AGL Energy and ACTEW Corporation and ownership of ActewAGL’s distribution arm was shared equally between Alinta and ACTEW Corporation. Further changes to the distribution partnership occurred when a consortium including Singapore Power purchased Alinta in 2007. The distribution partnership is now owned equally by Singapore Power and ACTEW Corporation. Alinta was subsequently renamed Jemena and is a subsidiary company of Singapore Power.
ActewAGL is Australia’s first multi-utility to offer electricity, natural gas, water and wastewater services under one roof.
In February 2004 ActewAGL entered into a management agreement with TransACT Capital Communications Pty Ltd. This means that ActewAGL now manages the day-to-day operations of TransACT. The TransACT network provides access to full telecommunication services. It offers telephony, high speed data and video services from a number of providers to residential, business and government customers in the ACT.
ActewAGL is committed to working closely with its graduate engineers to enhance their careers by providing on-going support throughout the PDP. ActewAGL’s commitment to the development and progression of their people is real and ActewAGL look forward to a long and prosperous relationship with Engineers Australia.
