Engineers Australia is the largest and most diverse engineering association in Australia, with over 100,000 members nationally and over 21,000 in Queensland. We undertake a range of vital programs to support the engineering profession.

Our activities maintain engineering standards in Australia by accrediting individual engineering competence to becomming Chartered, and accrediting tertiary engineering qualifications to international standards.

In addition to this, we cultivate lifelong learning by our members, celebrate excellence in engineering outcomes, champion professional and ethical conduct, and encourage primary and secondary students to explore the wonders of a career in the engineering and become the next generation of engineers.

Simon works in a senior role at BMACoal managing an engineering team. Simon is responsible for developing and implementing standards and governance.

Additionally Simon performs a role as National Councillor for Engineers Australia. Simon advocates for the value of engineers in the community and Engineers Australia’s role supporting the engineering profession, who are engineering a better future for our community.

 

Blake Harvey MIEAust CPEng RPEQ NPER

Deputy President

Blake is an engineering manager in the power industry, with a background in Asset Management, Operations and Planning, and currently working in Alternative Technologies.

Based in Rockhampton his key focus areas are innovation, regional development and leadership.

 

Dr Steven Goh MIEAust

Immediate Past President

Steven aims to lift the profile of the engineering profession and to advance its role and relevance within society. To achieve this, he will focus on the PEES themes; Professionalism (chartered and registration), Engagement (member, community, policy makers, media), Education in STEM (students, teachers, academics), and Sustainability (economic, social, innovation).

Steven have been a mechanical design engineer leading R&D in the heavy haulage axle component manufacturing industry before moving to own and manage a hospitality business, and now practicing as an engineering educator and researcher at USQ.

 

Mike Brady FIEAust CPEng

Mike is eager to continue with the Professional Engineers Act Working Party and the Overseas Qualified Engineers Support Group.

 

Bryony Elson GradIEAust

Bryony is a Mechanical Engineer with previous experience in Power Generation, currently working for BMA coal. Bryony hopes to boost the number of members promoting Engineering as a career choice to students.

 

Peter Ho FIEAust CPEng

Peter aims to promote the activities of the Division and enhance service to our members via the branches, societies, and regional groups. Peter is currently the Manager of Forensic and Integrity with Logicamms Pty Ltd.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jillian Kenny GradIEAust

After becoming involved with the Queensland committee of Young Engineers Australia early in 2010 Jillian quickly realised the benefits of contributing to the engineering community and held the role of Young Engineers Queensland Chair for 2011 and 2012.

Jillian is committed to raising the profile and understanding of engineering within the community and increasing the pool and bredth of engineers through education and strategic engagement with schools, universities, government and media.

Subsequent to graduating from QUT with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 2010, Jillian decided to pursue her passion for delivering sustainable engineering and community outcomes through a PhD in biomimicry and water infrastructure.

 

 

 

 

 

Ian McEwan

Executive Director

Ian's primary role is to deliver the operational plan endorsed by Queensland Division within financial, governance and legal boundaries.

 

Greg McMahon MIEAust CPEng

Greg has been a Chief Engineer and a Chief Instructor

His experience started with civil engineering design and construction, and now includes personnel and administration, international marketing, research and development, training establishments, consultancy and regulatory services, industrial relations, defence services, corporate support functions (mainly policy and planning) and information services.

 

Kenneth Pearce FIEAust CPEng

Ken has worked in the water policy field for the last 40 years. He was involved in the design and/or construction of Wivenhoe, Split-Yard Creek, Boondooma, Kinchant and Glenlyon Dams; and numerous other water infrastructure projects. He had his own consulting business for a decade from 1995. Ken is concerned about the deskilling of the public sector.

 

Chris Warnock FIEAust CPEng

Chris’ aim is to assist the Division Committee and Engineers Australia to enhance the reputation of the engineering profession through engaging with its members, particularly on issues with an infrastructure focus.

Chris’ background provides over 35 years as a professional engineer, predominantly in the rail engineering and infrastructure industries, for both public and private sectors.

National President of Engineers Australia

 

Dr Marlene Kanga FIEAust CPEng

Marlene is committed to ensuring that Engineers Australia remains relevant to the profession and delivers value to its members. Members want more technical information and high quality opportunities for professional development. Young engineers now comprise the majority of engineers and these products and services will use the latest technology and be structured to appeal to the new generation of engineering professionals.

Marlene is committed to the current priorities for the organisation, which are to encourage more members to become Chartered professionals and to achieve National Registration covered by uniform legislation. It is also important to engage with government, the media and the broader community to discuss the important contributions engineers make to modern life and the issues for which engineers deliver solutions such as climate change, water management and sustainability.

 

Division Managers and Assessors

Ian McEwan
Executive Director

Ian has been with Engineers Australia across a multitude of roles for more than a decade. After serving Queensland Division as Deputy Director for a number of years, Ian accepted the role of Executive Director of South Australia Division in early 2007. When the opportunity to lead the Queensland Division arose in early 2009, he returned as Executive Director and has implemented a series of changes to enhance the services and support offered to members and office bearers.

Jenny Hutchens
Operations Manager

Jenny joined Engineers Australia in June 2010 as the Accounts Manager for Queensland Division.  Jenny now manages the operations of the Queensland Division which includes the Division finances, administration, building matters, and human resources. 

Jenny works part time Monday to Thursday.

Kate Condon
Events and Communications Manager

Kate manages the corporate events program, communications and public relations for Engineers Australia's Queensland Division. Events include the prestigious Queensland Engineering Excellence Awards evening, Hawken Address and Young Engineers Gala Ball.

Kate manages the Queensland Awards program and engages with Engineers Australia Queensland's sponsors. Kate also delivers the Engineering Queensland newsletter and other important member communications.

Laura Kert
Chartered Membership Manager

For the past 16 years Laura has been working in administration supporting roles for large engineering companies, projects and design teams. She enjoys the fast pace, challenging and team oriented roles that these projects require for successful completion. Laura is honoured to be chosen as Chartered Assessment Centre Manager with Engineers Australia and looks forward to maintaining the standards and professionalism that Engineers Australia represents.

Megan Purdy
Industry Manager Queensland

Megan is a member of the National Industry Team based in the Queensland Division. The team aims to develop relationships to enhance collaboration with engineering employers focusing on implementing the Professional

Development Program (PDP).

The PDP is a structured program helping our members acquire and develop the competencies required to achieve Chartered Status. This is also a gateway to RPEQ.

Megan can assist both engineers and the organisations that employ engineers, understand the benefits of being Chartered and how to achieve that goal.

 

Amanda Ryan
Membership Engagement Manager

Amanda joined Engineers Australia's Queensland Division in September 2011. As the Membership Engagement Manager, Amanda now leads the Queensland Membership Engagement Team, supporting the delivery of Queensland CPD events, activities and programs. This support is provided to over 21,000 members from 47 groups across the entire state.

Amanda travels often to regional Queensland as a key focus of her role is to support, promote and advance CPD delivery to over 8000 regionally based members.

Dr Alan Collier FIEAust CPEng

National Assessor (part time)

Alan graduated from the Royal Military College and University of NSW with a first class honours degree in electrical engineering in 1976. He spent many years in light current engineering, principally telecommunications. He was involved in starting and managing a consultancy for 12 years from which he learnt many business lessons. As well as engineering he was involved in hands-on management and management consulting. He went on to obtain an honours law degree from the University of Melbourne in 1991 and practised for many years as a solicitor in technology and intellectual property. In 2008 he obtained his PhD after researching the commercialisation of university research. He has consulted to many large companies and governments, and has given advice on many innovative developments. He retains an interest in technology start-ups.

Colin Colquhoun FIEAust CPEng NPER FAICD
National Assessor (part time)

Colin graduated as a civil engineer from QUT in 1972, and later as a MEngSc (Project Management) from UNSW. His early career was in the pre-stressed concrete industry, working on freeway and rail bridges as well as some landmark building projects in the Sydney area.

 

He completed an MBA at Macquarie University in 1982. Colin later undertook training programs in USA at Wharton Business School and Columbia University in business strategy and sustainable competitive advantage. Colin established Colquhoun & Associates in 1992 and has been working with both public and private sector clients to improve their business competitiveness and service delivery.

 

Jane Copperthwaite MIEAust CPEng

 

 

Mike Garrett FIEAust CPEng RPEQ BEng (Civil)
National Assessor (part time)

Mike has over 35 years of experience in the transport (mainly rail) and construction industry in the fields of project management, business development, construction, marketing, contract negotiation, financial management, recruitment and team building, and the promotion of a wide range of products and services both domestically and internationally. Mike joined Engineers Australia as a National Assessor in April 2009 and, in conjunction with the other three Queensland-based assessors, is responsible for Stage 2 assessments for Chartered Status, RPEQ applications, and working with PDP companies to assist the graduate engineers in their Career Episode Reports submissions.

 

Don Muir FIEAust CPEng RPEQ BEng (Civil)
National Assessor (part time)

 

Don Muir has over 40 years of experience with Main Roads Queensland and was Deputy Director-General when he retired in 2004, In addition to his role as a National Assessor (Stage 2), Don also works as a part time consultant.

Don has extensive experience in the areas of program and project management and the planning, design and construction of roads and bridges.

John Reid FIEAust CPEng MICE RPEQ NPER BSc
National Assessor (part time)

John Reid is a Civil and Structural engineer who emigrated from the UK to Australia in 1982. After working for consulting engineers in Scotland, John continued in a building design role with the Commonwealth Government for a few years before Joining the Cement and Concrete Association of Australia to support and promote the use of concrete in structures of all types.

For the last 13 years John has been an independent consulting engineer specialising in concrete. He diagnoses problems, proposes solutions, provides technical reports and acts as an Expert Witness when required. Along with the 'after the fact' technical work, John spends a lot of time lecturing on concrete topics in an effort to improve the quality of the work at source.

John has served on the Board of the Structural College of Engineers Australia, including three years in the Chair, and he also worked for seven years as an Assessor in Queensland. He is now back in the Assessor role following a three-year break.
