Engineers Australia plays an important role in promoting engineering excellence and the contribution engineering makes to the community.
The awards programs seek to identify, recognise and reward outstanding achievement, eminence in the practice of engineering, and conspicuous service to the profession.
The annual Engineering Excellence Awards is the premier event for the engineering profession in Queensland. Promoting industry excellence, fostering leadership, and encouraging innovation and sustainability, this prestigious event attracts representation from all corners of Queensland's engineering community. All 2013 submissions are accepted electronically.

2013 Excellence Awards Sponsors
Categories
Projects can be entered in a maximum of two general award categories. Separate submissions must be prepared for each award category entry.
1. Building and Structures
Engineering products, building projects and facilities for non-industrial functions such as city buildings, housing developments, art galleries, museums, hospitals, retirement and resort villages, hotels, personnel transport terminals (air, sea, rail, road) in which engineering has a particular influence on the finished work.
2. Control Systems, Networks, Information Processing and Telecommunications
Products, projects and developments in control systems, networks, communications or information processing applications involving a high level of engineering practice.
3. Environment
Engineering activities particularly directed to achieve improvements in quality of life, protect our natural environment, assess and mitigate environmental impact, or to remediate environmental damage.
4. Industrial Development and Manufacturing
Engineering products, building projects and facilities for industrial functions such as mechanical equipment, chemical and mineral processes, bioengineering, ceramics, medical, fuel technology, material handling equipment and asset management. This category also relates to oil refineries, gas processing plants, mines, power stations, sugar mills, breweries, grain and cotton mills.
5. Project Management
Management of a project or an engineering work that achieves client requirements in harmony with the environment, business and community considerations, plus meets time, cost and quality targets.
6. Project Infrastructure under $50 million
Projects in any engineering discipline that provide facilities for use by or service to the community. This includes transport (bridges, roads, busways, railways, tunnels), water (sewage, energy, waste, chemical treatment), communications, defence and transmission of electricity and gas. The under $50 million value can be the total project value or a separable engineering portion of the project.
7. Project Infrastructure over $50 million
Projects in any engineering discipline that provide facilities for use by or service to the community. This includes transport (bridges, roads, busways, railways, tunnels), water (sewage, energy, waste, chemical treatment), communications, defence and transmission of electricity and gas. The $50 million or over value can be the total project value or a separable engineering portion of the project.
8. Research, Development and Innovation
The means by which innovative ideas are applied through reviewing existing engineering knowledge, formulating new engineering ideas and concepts, and testing and development by analysis or experiment.
9. Reports, Procedures and Systems
Reports of engineering activities that may include development, feasibility studies, computer modelling, environmental impact, planning investigations, procedures and systems. It is essential that a copy of the FULL report is submitted with your entry.
Overall Award - R. W. Hawken Award
Queensland Division’s most prestigious award for the most outstanding 2012 entry considered across all categories. All entrants are automatically considered for the overall award.

2013 submissions are accepted electronically and no nomination cost is involved. Please read the information and criteria below before nominating. Entries for the following individual awards are now open:
- Queensland Professional Engineer of the Year
- Queensland Engineering Associate of the Year
- Queensland Engineering Technologist of the Year
- Queensland Young Professional Engineer of the Year (<35 years)
- Queensland Young Associate of the Year (<35 years)
- Queensland Young Technologist of the Year (<35 years)
Awards for Young Engineers will be presented at the Young Engineers Gala Ball, all other awards will be presented at the Queensland Engineering Excellence Awards Evening.

About the Individual Awards
Engineers Australia's Individual Awards are to honour those engineers whose attributes have demonstrated great achievements and leadership within in the engineering profession.
Nominations must be submitted to the Division in which the nominee resides in and supported by at least one referee who is a financial member of Engineers Australia.
Engineers may self nominate for these awards, or can be nominated by an employer, peer or member of the community.
Nominees are asked to address the 5 National Criteria which demonstrate their service to the profession, innovation and the community, as outlined below.
The nominator will also be requested to upload the nominee's CV, short bio and photograph.
Winners of the Queensland Division Individual Awards go on to the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards.
Before completing the nomination criteria, please read the Guide to Nominate for an Individual Award, the National Criteria Guide and Division Level Terms & Conditions to ensure that the nominee fulfills all necessary criteria.
Judging criteria and weighting
30% Engineering competence
20% Demonstrated leadership skills
20% Positive/notable outcomes from engineering work
20% Creativity/innovation
10% Service to industry, the profession or the community
Conditions of nomination
Nominees must be financial members of Engineers Australia in the relevant grade of membership at the time of nomination.
A third party (such as an employer) can prepare a nomination on behalf of a nominee. However, at least one referee who is a financial member of Engineers Australia must support the nomination.
Nominees must agree to the nomination by accepting the terms and conditions of the nomination in order for it to be successfully submitted.

Legacy bequeathed to Engineers Australia Queensland Division to be awarded to a member who has made a significant contribution to advancing the public standing of the profession of engineering, particularly in the field of sustainable development.
Nominations can be submitted via email to Kate Condon kcondon@engineersaustralia.org.au. Candidate information should include a current CV and a statement outlining achievements in the field of sustainable development.
Nominations close 30 June 2013.
