NOVEMBER 2010

Chair Report - Gamila Macrury

As some of you may be aware Kenn Beer is off on a scholarship tour at the moment. He has been given the opportunity to tour around the west coast of America looking at how they handle road safety, and as such he has left the reins in my hands.

Last month we held the Loy Yang power station tour, which provided those who attended an interesting insight into the huge process that is coal fuelled power. I hope they gained an understanding as to the engineering reasons why coal is used as our baseline electricity source, while gas and hydro cover our peak needs. Making any change to the output of a coal fired power station is a slow and significant job.

The main issue concerning the industry this month is the new Royal Charter proposed by Engineers Australia. Refer to the ballot website to VOTE, voting is now open and closes on Monday, 15 November, 2010. For information on how these changes might affect you, please read the supporting documentation, I believe APESMA is opposed to these changes, however YEA National is publicly endorsing them.

From my understanding of APESMA's position, it is because they support professional engineers only, rather than the industry as a whole. I asked them to provide an outline of their position to be published here, but at the time of going to print it was unavailable.

My concern is not whether the ballot passes or not, but that EA receive a definitive voice either way, these changes have been brought before the members previously, but due to general indifference, no decision could be reached.

For those of you like me, who are currently ineligible to vote due to being slack Graduate members who have not upgraded to the grade of Member after your 3 years of work experience, GET ON IT!

Looking forward (oh dear I just quoted Gillard, I apologise) November is shaping up to be a great month. We have the traditional Movember event at Mountain Goat Brewery, with $5 from every ticket going towards the Movember Foundation. See the events section for more details.
