The SSEE's mission is to provide a national focus and leadership within the engineering profession for the implementation of sustainability for the benefit of the Australian society. Membership is open to anyone with a desire and passion to find out more about, and contribute towards the advancement of environmental and sustainability issues.
The SSEE also provides opportunities for members to network with other environmental professionals and those interested in environmental issues. A program of continual education is maintained through monthly seminars on a range of environmental issues. The SSEE publishes a quarterly national journal, 'The Environmental Engineer', which is provided free to members.

Chair: Adrian Piani
Newcastle Branch
The Newcastle Chapter of the SSEE provides Continuing Professional Development seminars on Sustainability related issues for the wide range of (primarily technical) professionals in and around the Hunter Valley, typically including engineering services, operations, consulting, and research, many of whom are involved in major industries such as coal mining, power generation, water management and transport. The chapter also provides local representation to the National SSEE board.
Our chapter regularly organises technical seminars for multi-disciplinary audiences on various aspects of sustainability related topics including water, energy, ecological impact minimisation, waste management and transport.
We are affiliated with the Newcastle Division of Engineers Australia whose office provides significant administrative support, as well as facilities and other resources for holding technical meetings. We also occasionally run joint technical meetings with other branches in the local Division.
Related Organisations
- The Hunter Environment Institute, is another local organisation with similar aims and objectives to our own, and is responsible for local Green Drinks.
- The Tom Farell Institute for the Environment is a research centre of the University of Newcastle whose aim is to engage the University with the region's environmental, social and economic development needs.
- The Australian Institute of Energy has a local branch in Newcastle.
- Newcastle is the location of the CSIRO's Energy Technology Research Centre, and governed by a local council well recognised for its environmental achievements.
Queensland Branch
The Queensland Branch of the SSEE runs a range of events and has some great information on sustainability and what it means for engineers.
