Awards

Engineers Australia plays an important role in promoting engineering excellence and the contribution engineering makes to the community. Our award programs seek to identify, recognise and reward outstanding achievement, eminence in the practice of engineering, and conspicuous service to the profession.
Tim Ferguson, Master of Ceremonies, captivated the 550 guests from the moment he walked on stage. Guest of Honour Chair of RedR Australia, Emeritus Professor Elizabeth Taylor AO, discussed the definition of Humanitarian Engineering, in particular the importance of engineering to the well-being, welfare and comfort of individuals and communities in disadvantaged circumstances.
Thirteen Excellence and twelve Highly Commended, along with four Personal Awards were presented on the 16 September at The Westin Hotel.
Finisar Australia was presented with the prestigious Bradfield Award for the FlexGrid. The President’s Award was awarded to Macmahon Contractors Pty Ltd with joint entrants, Sydney Catchment Authority and SMEC Australia; for the Nepean River Weirs Environmental Flow Release and Fish Passages Project.
All the Excellence Awards winners have the opportunity to enter the National Awards which will be presented in November.
Six of the Excellence Awards finalists and winners have been invited to have their projects displayed in the Innovations and Inventions Gallery at the Powerhouse Museum. Their projects will be seen by a half a million visitors during the Year Exhibition.
The Excellence Awards committee extends their thanks to the Excellence Awards Sponsors for their ongoing support of the Awards program, the 42 Excellence Awards judges, and the 13 Personal Awards judges. Thanks are also extended to the young engineer volunteers who assisted at the Awards evening, and last but certainly not least, to the 91 entrants and 51 finalists of the 2011Engineering Excellence Awards.

The Engineering Excellence Awards Sydney Division acknowledges the professionalism and pursuit of excellence by engineers throughout the country. The program also identifies, recognises, rewards and promotes individuals in Australian engineering.
It is time to recognise the high performers of Sydney engineering and nominate them for our 2011 personal awards program. These engineering individuals will have a record of academic and career achievements, service to the engineering team and to the community.
Personal Awards Program for 2011:
- Professional Engineer of the Year
- Entrepreneur of the Year
- Engineering Technologist of the Year

- Young Professional Engineer of the Year
- Student Engineer of the Year
Judging Criteria
Nominees/nominator's will be asked to address the fields provided in approximately 500 words per section and demonstrate how they have the following attributes gained through engineering. Nominees/ nominator's are encouraged to address the following five fields where relevant.
- Engineering competence
- Demonstrated leadership skills including leadership of teams
- Positive/notable outcomes from their engineering work
- Creativity/innovation
- Community service to industry, the profession and/or society
Nomination Process
- Professional Engineer of the Year
- Engineering Technologist of the Year
- Engineering Officer of the Year

Young Professional Engineer of the Year (Winner will receive $1000 prize money)
Nominations will be captured online from 2 March 2011 and close on 3 June 2011.
- Entrepreneur of the Year
Your nomination should include -
- Nominees name
- Place of work
- Concise description of why he/she should be considered for the Award
All nominations/suggested recipients will be considered by the Honours and Awards Committee.
- Student Engineer of the Year (Winner will receive $1000 prize money)
All entries will be first assessed by the appropriate University Faculty. Only the five (5) best entries from each Faculty can be submitted for final assessment by Engineers Australia, Sydney Division.
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must be a financial/student member in the relevant grade at the time of nomination and supported by at least one referee who is a financial member of Engineers Australia.
The competition for Young Professional Engineer is open to anyone who is nominated/enters up to age 35. All Nominees/Entrants must be either 35 or under as at 31 December 2011.
The nominee must agree to the nomination and be available to be interviewd by the judges.
Announcement of Winners
The Awards will be presented at the 2011 Engineering Excellence Awards on 16 September, at The Westin, Sydney.
