Advances in Global Mining Technology - April 2012
On Thursday 26th April, our Engineers Australia Southern Highlands and Tablelands Regional Group (SHTRG) was host to Peter Johnson at our monthly dinner seminar. Peter is a mechanical engineer and General Manager of Maptek Australia. The topic was ‘Advances in Global Mining Technology’ where Peter outlined the development of Maptek as a company and the development of their 3D laser modelling software (VULCAN) and equipment (I-Site Laser scanner). To conclude the presentation, Peter discussed the remarkable rescue effort to save the 33 miners that were trapped in San Jose mine in Chile as well as the application of their equipment in the effort. His presentation gave a broad perspective on the use of their equipment in industry, current technologies/processes. It was an enjoyable presentation and evening. We sincerely thank Peter for his excellent presentation, which is now posted on our website along with videos that he showed.

Advances in Medical Bionics Research - March 2012
On Thursday 29 March, the Engineers Australia Southern Highlands and Tablelands Regional Group was host to Associate Professor Simon Moulton, Associate Program leader for the Bionic Research Program within the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science (ACES) at the University of Wollongong, at their inaugural Seminar Dinner in their 2012 Series on the theme "Engineering Challenges" attended by forty eight (48) members and guests.
Simon spoke on the topic "Advances in Medical Bionics Research", and his excellent and informative presentation highlighted how the medical bionics research being undertaken in their laboratories used organic conducting materials (conducting polymers and carbon nanotubes) to regenerate damaged nerves and muscle, deliver therapeutic drugs in programmed doses and successfully connect medical bionic devices to cellular tissue. He also described the world class research facilities available at the Intelligent Polymer Research Institute (IPRI) located on the Innovation Campus of the University of Wollongong, which has been built with funds from a large Federal Government grant. We sincerely thank Simon for his excellent presentation, which is now posted on our website.
