About Us

In 1918 the Tasmania Division of the Institution of Engineers was established so that engineers resident in Tasmania would have a local body to join. In August 1919 it became a foundation society member of Engineers Australia. By March 1920, 41 of the 65 Tasmania members had transferred to Engineers Australia membership. By December 1920 the Tasmania Division had 74 members. Mr John H. Butters was our first Chairman.
Until 1986 the Division never really had anywhere to call home, until then it had moved from office to office with varying contracted secretarial services, mainly provided by accounting firms. In 1986 the Division established its headquarters in the restored Royal Engineers Building at 2 Davey Street, Hobart.
Engineers Australia nationally has approximately 93,000 members. Locally, Tasmania Division has almost 1,300 members.
